Mak said Not Bad But Not A Fan of the Format. It is the early 1800's, the Napoloenic Wars are over, and two wealthy British gentelmen make a bet based on a series of books in which the author claims to have traveled to some of the most unknown (at the time) places in the world. Most consider the books to be mostly fiction, but some claim they could be real. Two crews set out in separate airships in a race to be first to prove or disprove the books. The story is told mainly in journal entries and letters from Gregory Conan Watts, a war journalist who is part of one of the crews undertaking the journey. He has been hired on to write the story of the journey as it unfolds. We read h. Victoria Bastedo said Fly away to America in this Book of Adventure. Dawn of Steam by Jeffrey Cook reads like a digest in an explorer’s magazine. The language is a smooth antiquation, clear, flowing but not pedantic. Don’t forget the Steampunk. The dirigible, mechanical machines, possessed contraptions and ancient pistols are just part of the color that fills out this book. Wonderfully researched, you are in good hands while you absorb history in vibrant fictional form. If you love the likes of Jules Verne, and the journals of early explorers, you’ll love this book. The only parts that dragged for me was going to war with the Spaniards. A long tangential side trip to New Orleans delay. funny hats and brothel hangouts Victoria Canny So, even as someone who isn't that well versed in the steampunk genre/lifestyle, I still found this book to be highly enjoyable. I think what drew me in the most was that it wasn't just all cogs and steamships, funny hats and brothel hangouts. These are complex characters given very "Victorian" ideals of wanting to go out and explore, for the sake of having their names go down in the history books for all time. The cast of characters themselves are almost as diverse as this genre itself has become. Highly recommend for those just starting to dabble into steampunk, or even those veterans who want a breath of fresh air.

Most problematic of all, the crew hired by the other side of the wager seem willing to win by any means necessary. Persuading him to lend his talents and refitted airship to the venture requires bringing along his sister, his cousin, and the crew that flew with him during the Napoleonic Wars. Some parties are not at all happy with the post-war political map. The voyage is further complicated by the human element. No one expects the trip to involve a legendary storm - or the Year Without a Summer of 1815-1816. In the process, their journey helps lay the foundations for an age of enlightenment and technology to come.. Dawn of Steam: First Light follows these adventurers, as they open up the world.
