To the delight of his Christian mother, Edward was ordained an Anglican priest in 1912 and assigned to Onion Lake, where he did missionary work with the Reverend John R. While on a train to Dauphin, Manitoba, Canon Edward Ahenakew suffered a stroke and was taken to a local hospital in Canora, where he died on July 12, 1961, at the age of 76.
